CSPO Advisory Board

The CSPO Advisory Board offers palm-oil producing countries advisory support on how the transition to environmentally sustainable cultivation practices can be further strengthened and improved upon.

With its geographically diverse and inter-disciplinary advisory board, including members of Parliaments, acclaimed professors and senior environmental advisors to the United Nations amongst others, the CSPO aims to amplify expert voices in the South and beyond.

As part of its global mandate, the advisory board members guide the future direction of the CSPO and its ambition to create a more sustainable palm oil sector globally.

Ibrahim Özdemir  

Founding President of Hasan Kalyoncu University & Consultant of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Professor Ibrahim Özdemir is a world-renowned ecologist who has been a consultant to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) since 2015. He is Professor of Philosophy & Ecology and Founding President at Hasan Kalyoncu University, and previously was Director-General at the Department of Foreign Affairs in the Turkish Ministry of Education.

He was a lead member of the drafting team for the Islamic Declaration on Global Climate Change endorsed by the UN United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Muhammed Magassy

Member of the Gambian National Assembly & Member of Parliament for The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

Muhammed Magassy has been a Gambian National Assembly Member since 2012. He was previously a member of the Executive for Gambia’s Opposition Coalition.

He is also a Member of Parliament for The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), an economic union comprised of 15 African Countries and the Executive Director of the Magassy Foundation for Relevant Easy Adult Literacy.

Paulo Casaca

Paulo Casaca is a Portuguese politician and was a Member of the European Parliament for Portugal’s Socialist Party (Partido Socialista); part of the Party of European Socialists from 1999 to 2009.

Founder and executive director of the “South Asia Democratic Forum”; he is also the founder of the international co-operation association registered in Brussels ARCHumankind, “Alliance to Renew Co-operation among Humankind”, founder of the “Euro Reform Initiative”, of the consultancy company on sustainable development registered in Brussels, Lessmeansmore, Land and Energy Sustainable Systems, Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the US in the first semester of 2010; team leader of a report commissioned by the US-based NGO Committee to Study the Organization of Peace “A Green Ray over Iraq” presented to the UN last March.

Paulo Casaca was a Member of the European Parliament for ten years where, namely, he chaired the delegation for relations with NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He was a Councillor in the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Union from 1996 to 1999, chief of staff of the Minister for Territorial Planning and Public Works in 1995/1996, economics advisor for the socialist fraction in the national parliament in 1989/1990, 1992, 1994/1995.

Previous to this position, he was a Councillor in the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Union from 1996 to 1999, chief of staff of the Minister for Territorial Planning and Public Works in 1995/1996, economics advisor for the socialist fraction in the national parliament and Founder of Amnesty International Section in Ponta Delgada, Azores. During his academic career, Paulo Casaca lectured at the Economics Departments of the Lisbon Accounting Institute and at the University of the Azores from 1980 and was then invited as a professor at the Lisbon Technical University.

Isabel Schatzschneider

Isabel Schatzschneider is an environmental activist and researcher specialising in food ethics, religious ethics and animal welfare. Currently she is working as a research associate at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Glenn Schatz

Glenn Schatz is a former Project Manager at the United States Department of Energy. He is a co-founder of ECORE Ventures, a cleantech project development company. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he eventually went back to teach Energy Policy as a military officer and civilian professor. He was also formerly a Commander for the U.S. Navy Reserve and a former nuclear submarine officer. Glenn is Vice President of Link Labs, a leading innovator in low power, wide-area network technologies that power the Internet of Things (IoT).

Camilla Barungi

Camilla Barungi is a cultural and future of work strategist. She is the founder of Alliance 4 Development; a global strategic advisory consultancy focused on accelerating innovation ecosystems in Africa in line with the UN SDGs.

She is a social impact entrepreneur who introduced ‘African Moringa’ to the global market in 2009. Camilla has curated, organized, moderated and been a panelist at international SDGs conferences that build models of cooperation for multi stakeholders like UN ECOSOC’s Finance for Development, the Africa Blockchain Conference, the Africa Fintech Siummit, Blockchain for Impact, the Africa 4IR Summit and more.

She is the owner of a Social Impact PPP with the Kingdom of Tooro to develop a cultural industrial accelerator around the Batooro’s heritage of manufacturing barkcloth textile; Uganda’s sole intangible cultural heritage recognized by Unesco.

Mizanur Raja

Project Lead for the Center for Sustainable Palm Oil Studies (CSPO)

Mizanur Raja is the Project Lead for the Center for Sustainable Palm Oil Studies (CSPO). He is an Advisor for IFEES, an environmental NGO and has led projects with Friends of the Earth, London Sustainability Exchange, Campaign Against Climate Change, Alliance of Religions and Conservation amongst others.

He has given lectures on religion and environment at the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Working with the Network for Life Science Executive Leaders (LSX), Mizanur has played a key role in raising awareness of the importance of water wastage, recycling and renewable energy supply across different religious institutions in London.
